Fabric Care by Fibre: Washing, Shrinkage, and Pilling Explained

A fabric's spec sheet describes how it leaves the mill. What happens after that — every wash, every tumble-dry, every season of wear — decides whether it stays that fabric. Shrinkage, felting, fading, and pilling are not random bad luck; they are predictable physical responses of specific fibres and constructions to heat, moisture, and agitation. Understand the mechanism and care stops being a list of superstitions.

Why fabrics change: the three mechanisms

Shrinkage (relaxation)

Most shrinkage in cotton and other cellulosic fabrics is relaxation shrinkage: yarns are held under tension during spinning, knitting/weaving, and finishing, and the first exposures to warm water and agitation let them relax back toward their natural length. That is why the first wash or two do most of the damage, and why knits — whose looped structure stores more tension — generally shrink more than wovens of the same fibre. Quality spec sheets state a tested maximum shrinkage (for pre-shrunk or compacted cotton this is often in the low single digits); if the number is absent, assume the risk is yours and wash a swatch before cutting or committing.

Felting (wool's special case)

Wool fibres are covered in microscopic scales. Heat, moisture, and agitation make those scales ratchet against each other and lock — the fibre mass condenses irreversibly. That is felting, and it is why a jumper can leave the machine two sizes smaller and dense as a boot liner. It is also why "machine-washable" wools exist: treatments (such as the process behind many merino basics) smooth or coat the scales. The label tells you which wool you have; without it, treat wool as hand-wash-cold.

Pilling (abrasion)

Pills are balls of loose fibre ends that abrasion teases out of the yarn and tangles on the surface. Short, weak fibres pill and then break free (low-grade cotton pills but self-clears); strong fibres like polyester pill and hold on, which is why poly blends often look pilled longer. Looser knits pill more than dense wovens. You cannot eliminate pilling, but you can slow it: wash garments inside out, prefer gentler cycles, avoid overloading the drum, and remove pills with a fabric shaver rather than pulling them.

Reading care labels like a spec

Care symbols are compressed instructions, not decoration. The five-symbol family covers washing (tub), bleaching (triangle), drying (square), ironing (iron), and professional cleaning (circle). The practical translations that matter most:

  • Dots mean temperature — more dots, more heat, on both wash and iron symbols. One dot is cool, three is hot.
  • Bars under a symbol mean gentleness — one bar for a mild cycle, two for very mild.
  • A cross through anything means don't.

Treat the label as the manufacturer's tested limit, not a challenge. You can always wash cooler and gentler than the label allows; going hotter and rougher is where fabrics leave spec.

Care rules by fibre

Cotton and linen

Machine-washable and tolerant — their weakness is heat, which drives both shrinkage and fading. Wash cool-to-warm (many households default to 30–40°C), and know that the dryer, not the washer, causes most cumulative shrinkage in cotton: high tumble heat keeps extracting relaxation shrinkage wash after wash. Line-dry or tumble low for anything fitted. Linen shares cotton's chemistry, wrinkles more, and actually gains softness with laundering; iron it damp if you want it crisp.

Wool

Avoid the felting triad — heat, agitation, and moisture together. Hand-wash cold or use a dedicated wool cycle with wool detergent (standard detergents often contain enzymes that attack protein fibres — the same reason they work on food stains). Never wring; press water out in a towel and dry flat, as hanging a wet knit stretches it under its own weight. Between washes, wool mostly doesn't need washing — airing overnight exploits its natural odour resistance.

Silk

A protein fibre like wool, with the same enemies plus two of its own: prolonged sunlight and alkaline detergents. Hand-wash cold with a gentle detergent or use a mesh bag on the gentlest machine cycle if the label permits, dry away from direct sun, and iron low on the reverse. Perfume and deodorant residues can mark silk — let them dry before dressing.

Polyester, nylon, and acrylic

The easy-care group: wash warm or cool, minimal shrinkage, fast drying, wrinkle-resistant. Their two real issues are heat — synthetic fibres soften and can permanently crease or glaze at hot-iron and hot-dryer temperatures, so keep both low — and odour retention in polyester activewear, which improves with prompt washing and occasional specialist sports detergents. Wash fleece and other brushed synthetics inside out on gentle to slow pilling and reduce microfibre shedding; a filter bag helps with the latter.

Viscose, modal, and lyocell

Soft and drapey, but many viscose fabrics lose significant strength when wet, so agitation that a dry fabric would shrug off can distort or break wet fibres. Gentle cold cycles or hand-washing, no wringing, reshape and dry flat or line-dry gently. Modal and lyocell are generally more robust than standard viscose, but follow the label — this family varies widely by process and finish.

Elastane blends

Elastane's enemy is heat: hot washes, hot dryers, and hot irons degrade the stretch fibre long before the main fibre suffers, which is how leggings turn baggy. Wash cool, skip fabric softener (it can coat and impair stretch recovery over time), and air-dry. When a stretch garment stops recovering, the elastane is gone — no care step brings it back.

Care as a buying decision

Everything above feeds back into fabric choice: care requirements are specs you accept at purchase, not surprises that happen later.
